VideoLAN made major announcements at CES 2025, announcing that it will integrate new AI-powered features into VLC Player.The new feature will allow users to create and translate subtitles in real time, without the need for an internet connection or cloud-based services.
VLC to support AI subtitle translation
According to a statement from VideoLAN, the new subtitling function will use open-source language models to process audio and produce subtitles directly on the user’s device. This means that VLC users will have access to subtitle support without the need for external models.Jean-Baptiste Kempf, President of VideoLAN, said: “This is a significant advance for VLC and the open source media ecosystem.By giving our users the power to create their subtitles natively, we eliminate dependency on third-party services, while protecting privacy and increasing accessibility and language support.”
With VLC surpassing 6 billion downloads worldwide, the announcement underscored its widespread adoption. VideoLAN stated that the user base continues to grow with the increase in the number of active users.
